The Library Foundation raises funds so that the Central Library and the 72 branches can continue to provide computers accessible to the public, free of charge. For many households the Library is the only source for computers or Internet access. Currently there are nearly 2,200 computers used by Library patrons. In 2008, over 6 million hours of patron use were logged. Each Library branch provides free wireless access to the Internet, a service that is growing in popularity. In addition, the Library has become a valuable employment search tool for thousands of local job seekers.

Contributions to the Foundation's New Technologies Fund supports the Library's ability to bridge the digital divide by:

  • Providing critical network hardware and software, including fiber optics to accommodate demands on the system placed by new, more advanced technologies.
  • Replacing and upgrading existing computer workstations, printers and servers to meet increased demand for access and to replace outdated equipment.
