Volunteering

Library Store Associates

This group provides support for the Central Library Store. In addition to attending library-related events, members assist Store Manager Christine Romero with a variety of tasks ranging from sales to arranging displays. Members are asked to assist in the Store three to four hours a month.

Foundation Events

The Library Foundation needs volunteers to help in the office and at special events like author readings, fund raising dinners, and the Gregory Peck Reading Series.

hen Mary E. Foy, an 18-year old graduate of Los Angeles High School, was appointed City Librarian in 1880, her duties included keeping accounts, hostessing the Ladies Reading Room, settling bets, answering questions, and refereeing daily chess games. She also collected subscription fees and fines, instituted a card catalog system, and increased the collection to more than 3,000 volumes.
