ach day, downtown workers, library visitors, and international tourists find serenity in the Maguire Gardens of the Central Library. The garden's most prominent art installation, "Spine," designed to be read like a book, reminds visitors of the thought and knowledge symbolized by the library. The spine, or backbone, also provides the strength and vitality of the body beyond the thought process. Artist Jud Fine saw the concept as a collaboration with the Library's original architect, Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, who designed the "Well of Scribes" and succession of three pools.
