Overview

Our libraries are true community centers, offering free public access to resources that inspire, educate, and entertain.

The Los Angeles Public Library's basic services -- staff, building and equipment maintenance, and core collections -- are provided by city funding. What is often not covered are those programs, resources, and activities that help make the Library more than a "building with books."

Contributions to the Library Foundation help the Library create innovative new opportunities for learning and growth, and remain at the national forefront of public library service.

During the coming year, the Library Foundation will raise funds to support the Library's commitment to providing enhanced opportunities for literacy, reading enrichment, and lifelong learning.

Please go to Ways to Help to learn how to support any of the programs and services listed in this web site.

I

n June 1921, a bond issue in support of a new Central Library came before the voters. One campaign piece proclaimed: "Grow Up Los Angeles! Own Your Own Public Library and Take Your Place with Progressive Cities. This will solve a fifty-year-old problem...and give the Public Library a permanent home that will be a commercial asset and civic inspiration." Voters responded with a resounding 71% margin of approval.
