After her mother died from Alzheimer’s, Lauren Kessler took a job at an eldercare facility specializing in the disease. There— among the victims of Alzheimer’s and the underpaid, overworked caregivers—she was surprised to find life filled with humor, and grace, and unexpected humanity.
Lauren Kessler is the author of five works of narrative nonfiction, including Dancing with Rose, a Washington Post bestseller, CleverGirl, a Los Angeles Times bestseller The Happy Bottom Riding Club, and Oregon Book Award winner Stubborn Twig. Stubborn Twig was chosen as the book for all Oregon to read in honor of the state’s 2009 sesquicentennial.
Her journalism has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Los Angeles TimesMagazine, O magazine, salon and The Nation. She is founder and editor of Etude,the online magazine of narrative nonfiction, and directs the graduate programin literary nonfiction at the University of Oregon.
Debra Cherry is a clinical psychologist and the Executive Vice President of the Alzheimer's Association of the California Southland where she oversees strategic planning, programs and advocacy efforts on behalf of people with dementia and their families. Debra is a contributing author of California's Alzheimer's Disease Management Guideline, a practice guideline for primary care physicians. She is a national leader in efforts to improve access to dementia services for people from diverse ethnic backgrounds and one of the developers of the award-winning El Portal- Latino Alzheimer's Project.
