For the fiftieth anniversary of Sputnik, go the behind-the-scenes to hear the story of the fierce battles on earth that launched the superpowers into space.
Matthew Brzezinski served as Moscow Correspondent for the Wall Street Journal in the mid-1990s. His book on Russia's post-Communist chaos, Casino Moscow, was published in 2001. Following the attacks on the US on 11 September, he covered homeland security as a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine. His book on the counter-terror effort and post-9/11 paranoia, Fortress America was published by Bantam in 2004. His new book is Red Moon Rising: The Story of a Little Satellite that Started the Space-Race and Gave Birth to a Wireless World, which tells the story of the launch of Sputnik.
Tim Naftali is the director of the Nixon Presidential Materials Project and director-designate of the federal Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Musuem, which officially opened this summer in Yorba Linda, California. Before joining the National Archives and Records Administration in October 2006, Tim was at the University of Virginia's Miller Center where he wrote widely on foreign policy and presidential history. His latest books are Kruschev's Cold War (co-authored with Aleksandr Fursenko) and Blind Spot: The Secret History of American Counterterrorism.
