the Exposition Park Branch. The branch now has more computers
and more space for books and people, including a meeting room, an adult literacy center and special reading areas for children and teenageers – a needed addition to the community.
Meeting Community Needs
Our libraries have become the centers of the communities they serve. Regular patrons are using the library more and people who have never been to the library before are coming in and borrowing material they otherwise might not be able to afford or would have had to purchase. Once inside, these new library users are discovering state-of-the-art libraries with new technology, a rich collection of materials and programs for all ages.
Much of this is the result of the largest library construction program in the nation. The program continued with the August 2008 opening of the Exposition Park – Bethune Regional Branch's new facility, and construction of the newest and the city's 72nd branch in Silver Lake. The Silver Lake Branch is one of seven library buildings added to the original program and funded through cost savings. With the opening of the new Silver Lake Branch in November 2009, more than 90% of the city's library system is new or renovated.
