Pirates, explorers, alchemists, scientists and spies all joined the chase for cochineal, a spectacular red dye that was once one of the world’s most precious commodities. Greenfield, whose grandfather and great-grandfather were dyers, carries the reader over centuries and continents in her visual lecture.
