Jeffrey D. Sachs is Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University and Special Advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon on the Millennium Development Goals. He is internationally renowned for his work as an economic advisor to governments and international organizations around the world.

Ira Jackson is the dean of the Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management. At the age of 26, he became chief of staff to Boston Mayor Kevin White. He later became senior associate dean of Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Mr. Jackson left the Kennedy School to become Commissioner of Revenue for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, where he was credited with being one of the architects of the state's "economic miracle." Later, he served as executive vice president of Bank Boston for a dozen years. Mr. Jackson then returned to Harvard as the director of its Center for Business and Government at the Kennedy School and later became the first presidentof the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation in Atlanta. Prior to coming to Claremont, he was president and CEO of the Arizona State University Foundation. He is the co-author, with Jane Nelson, of Profits with Principles: Seven Strategies for Delivering Value with Values.

Sarah Bein, a native Angeleno, received her M.D. from Stanford University. She is the author of three collections of poetry, and her latest book, Thirty-Three Hats for Julia, published by Red Hen Press, is her first work combining the topics of illness and doctoring into the medium of poetry. She is the recipient of several grants, including two Stanford University School of Medicine Arts and Humanities Scholars Grants as well as a Katherine McKormack Traveling Grant. She is one of the recipients of the Lenore Marshall Barnard Prize for Poetry and her poetry has appeared in both medical and literary journals. She currently practices medicine in Los Angeles and continues to write poetry.

Terry Wolverton is the author of six books: Embers, a novel-in-poems; Insurgent Muse: Life and Art at the Woman's Building, a memoir, Bailey's Beads, a novel; and three collections of poetry: BlackSlip, Mystery Bruise and Shadow and Praise.  She has also editedfourteen literary anthologies, including Mischief, Caprice, and Other Poetic Strategies.  She is the founder of Writers At Work, a creativewriting center in Los Angeles, where she teaches fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry.

Elizabeth Bradfield's first book of poems, Interpretive Work, was published in 2008 by Arktoi Books, a new imprint of Red Hen Press.  Her poems have appeared in The Atlantic Monthly, Poetry, and Field as well as the anthologies Best New Poets 2006 and Joyful Noise: An Anthologyof American Spiritual Poetry.  A native of the Pacific Northwest who has since called Cape Cod and Alaska home, she holds an MFA from the University of Alaska Anchorage and is founder and editor of Broadsided (www.broadsidedpress.org). Currently a Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford University, when not writing, she works as a web designer and naturalist.

Poet, essayist, and short story writer, Charles Hood has given readings from Guadalajara to Papua New Guinea.  In UC Irvine's MFA program he studied with Pulitzer Prize-winners Charles Wright and Louise Gluck.  His work often combines history, nature, humor, and a strong narrative line.  His photographs and mixed media art pieces have appeared on book covers and in thirty art shows.  Besides poetry healso publishes in ornithology journals and has identified over 4,000 bird species in the wild.  He teaches at Antelope Valley College and has been a ski instructor, a dish washer, a factory worker, and a private bird guide in Africa.  He is a contributing editor to Los Angeles Review.

Ron Koertge received his BA from the University of Illinois and his MA from the University of Arizona. He taught English at Pasadena City College in Pasadena, California from 1965 to 2001. Koertge is the author of many books of poetry including Fever, Sex Object, 12 Photographs of Yellowstone, The Hired Nose, The Father Poems, The Jockey Poems, Men Under Fire, Diary Cows, Life on the Edge of the Continent, High School Dirty Poems, and Making Love to Roget's Wife, and Geography of the Forehead. He is the recipient of an NEA fellowship in Literature (Poetry) and a California Arts Council grant (Poetry). His work has been included in Best American Poetry (1999).

Christopher Rauschenberg was born in New York in 1951 and has practiced photographic art since 1957. He has photographed in 26 countries and has had 83 solo shows in 6 countries. Available monographs of his work include three books and a deck of cards. He is a co-founder and co-director of Blue Sky Gallery (an internationally respected non-profit photography gallery www.BlueSkyGallery.org) where, over the last 30 years, he has co-curated and co-produced 643 solo exhibitions and 46 group shows. He has recently completed two large projects. In one, he has organized a group of a dozen artists who joined him in a nine year long systematic photographic exploration and documentation of the city of Portland and then immediately organized a second group of artists for a second nine year cycle (www.PortlandGridProject.com) In the other, he took three trips to Paris and re-photographed 500 of the images made of that city by Eugène Atget between 1890 and 1927. Mary Roach is the author of BONK, Spook, and the New York Times bestseller Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers. Stiff was a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers pick for 2003, a Northern California Book Awards finalist, and an American Library Association Alex Award (for adult books that appeal to young adults) winner. Steve Coll is a writer for The New Yorker and author of the Pulitzer-Prize winning Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and Bin Laden, from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001. He is president of the New America Foundation, a public policy institute in Washington. Previously he served, over twenty years, as a reporter, foreign correspondent and ultimately as managing editor of the Washington Post. He is also the author of On the Grand Trunk Road, The Deal of the Century, and The Taking of Getty Oil. Coll received a 1990 Pulitzer Prize for explanatory journalism and the 2001 Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for outstanding international print reporting and the 2000 Overseas Press Club Award for best magazine reporting from abroad. Ghost Wars, published in 2004, received the Pulitzer for general non-fiction and the Arthur Ross award for the best book on international affairs.

Mike Shuster is a diplomatic correspondent and roving foreign correspondent for NPR. He is based in NPR's Los Angeles bureau. When he is not traveling outside the U.S., he covers issues of nuclear non-proliferation and weapons of mass destruction, terrorism, and the Pacific Rim. In the past two years, he has contributed many reports to NPR's extensive coverage of the Middle East, traveling four times to Israel since September 2000. He has also reported from Afghanistan, Iran, and Iraq.

Born in Alabama in 1945, Tobias Wolff traveled the country with his mother, finally settling in Washington State, where he grew up. He attended the Hill School in Pennsylvania until he was expelled for repeated failures in mathematics in his final year, whereupon he joined the Army. He spent four years as a paratrooper, including a tour in Vietnam. Following his discharge he attended Oxford University in England, where he received a First Class Honours degree in English in 1972. Returning to the United States, he worked variously as a reporter, a night watchman, a waiter and a high school teacher before receiving a Wallace Stegner Fellowship in Creative Writing at Stanford University in 1975. He is currently Ward W. and Priscilla B. Woods Professor in the Humanities at Stanford.

His books include the memoirs This Boy's Life and In Pharaoh's Army; the shortnovel The Barracks Thief; three collections of stories, In The Garden of the North American Martyrs, Back in the World, The Night in Question; and, most recently, the novel Old School. He has also edited several anthologies, among them Best American Short Stories, A Doctor's Visit: The Short Stories of Anton Chekhov, and The Vintage Book of Contemporary American Stories. His work is translated widely and has received numerous awards, including the PEN/Faulkner Award, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, the PEN/Malamud Award and the Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

David L. Ulin is book editor of the Los Angeles Times.
