Who We Are

The Library Foundation of Los Angeles is an independent fund-raising organization that partners with the Los Angeles Public Library to support, supplement, and strengthen programs and technology that are not funded by the City. In 16 years, the Foundation has raised $80 million to help support the Central Library and the 72 neighborhood branches. The Foundation enhances the Library as a center for literary and cultural learning of the highest caliber, enriching the life of every Angeleno.

History
When fires devastated the Central Library in 1986, corporate and community leaders launched the Save the Books campaign to raise funds to replace the more than 400,000 destroyed volumes. Thousands of people volunteered. Millions of dollars were raised and a legacy was created. Lodwrick M. Cook, Chairman and CEO of ARCO, led the Save the Books campaign.

Inspired by this outpouring of support, Mr. Cook, along with local civic leaders, created a public/private partnership committed to ensuring the continued growth and development of the Los Angeles Public Library.

In 1992, the Library Foundation of Los Angeles was established to raise private sector support to benefit the Central Library and the 72 neighborhood branches. Mr. Cook became the Foundation's first Chairman and many of his Save the Books colleagues joined as founding members of the Board of Directors.

The Library Foundation of Los Angeles is a 501(c)(3), 509 (a)(1) non-profit corporation. Tax I.D. #95-4368250.
